Ken and I are sequestered away in a hotel room this three-day weekend, enjoying our annual planning time. We came this year with no agenda, knowing we needed rest and set-aside couple time as much as anything else. I love how God reveals the theme of our current season and gives us clarity about what strengths we need to move into the new year. He has done this every.single.time we set aside days just to be quiet with him.

Give me an undivided heart.

Psalm 86 has 15 petitions in just 17 verses.

Hear me.
Answer me.
Guard my life.
Save me.
Have mercy on me.
Bring joy to me.
Hear my prayer.
Listen to my cry.
Teach me your way.
Give me an undivided heart.
Turn to me.
Have mercy on me.
Grant your strength to me.
Save me.
Give me a sign.

In each day, we have a multitude of needs. We are torn between desires and discipline, appetites and apathy. In each day, we struggle to find our true identity. But one request ties our fragmented ways into one piercing cry. “Make me a whole person!”

Help us, O Lord, walk out the ways your are teaching us, that we may be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord.  (1 Cor. 15:58)
