He Called Her Wo-man

He Called Her Wo-man

He Called Her Wo-man

But for Adam no suitable helper was found.  So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.  Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

The man said,  “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.  That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”    Genesis 2:21-24

In the beginning of us he started calling me woman.  And in the company of others there was always a watchfulness, the same spirit engaged that draws people to girl-fights, tabloids, and husband or wife bashing in the break room.  They just didn’t get it.

To be called woman meant this man had named me.  Named me bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh, and what name could seal me to him more than his term of endearment? Woman.

I heard a message Sunday preached from Genesis 1-3.  I have studied my way through the Creation, attended conferences with the entire morning session exploring these chapters, and have a pastor friend who preached these anytime he was given the opportunity.  Or rather, EVERY time he was.  In this new writing series I want to share with you God-moments from messages I’ve heard.  You know the ones, when something brand new lifts off the page and your heart begins to beat a bit faster.  The moment you felt God lean in closer and you released your soul to the wonder of Him.

In an attempt to refrain from re-preaching the entire message I’m simply going to give you points to ponder.  If you’re interested you can listen to Strength and Honor here.

  • God created everything from the clay of the ground?  Everything but woman.  Think about why she was created.  God didn’t realize it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone.  He knew before hand.  God was making a clear point Adam was not made to go it alone.  Eve was created as a solution to a problem.  Woman: created to be a solution.  Think about how she was created.  We were created from the side of man.  There is something profound in the honor God bestowed on woman from the very way He created us.  We were created with a wiring and purpose to reflect the relational strength and heart of His divine image, a reflection of His divine heart.

You were made perfectly to live into your potential and fulfill your purpose.

  • Woman, the mother of the Fall.  She took the fruit because she believed God had held out on her, right?  She believed the lie that to eat would make her like God.  Oh the arrogance.  This has been my understanding of the beginning of sin.  And though I am aware of my great pride, my desire to rule my own life and heart, this understanding hasn’t helped me.  Really, not one bit, in living into the reality of who I want to be in Christ.  Think about why she was talking to a snake.  Yes, every understanding of this passage returns to a lack of trust in God.  But the lie I understand, the one that has followed me through my days is that God withheld something from me.  I’m not perfect yet, not in an attempt to be God but because I desire to please Him.  He created me in an imperfect image of God.  And like you, I have been grabbing at things to add to myself to make myself complete.  To perfect my value.  To actually be the image of God.

She was convinced.

We spend our days with if only’s, looking for something to make ourselves whole, as though somehow God made a mistake with us.  Our real temptation is born from this question.  Can I really trust God in creating me to be who I am supposed to be?  Our great Fall?  We fall every time we cease to believe we were created to be a solution and start seeing ourselves as a problem.

You were made perfectly to live into your potential and fulfill your purpose.

Sweet Favored One.  Your desire to be thinner . smarter . richer . a perfect mom . a better scripture memorizer . a more faithful servant to others . something other than you are right now … might be affirmation of a lie you’ve been hearing all your life.  A lie from the beginning of time.  Woman listened to the snake “and was convinced.”  Don’t listen to the lie anymore.  Because you were created with tender love, a reflection of the divine heart, as a solution to a problem.

If you find yourself in a low place, one filled with regrets and a knowledge that you’ve messed your life up in a big way, I want you to think on the Woman.  Can you imagine a lower place?  She had lost her place in complete unbroken communion with God.  She was the helper and had turned the eyes of her man away from the truth of God.  How do you face the world with this failure?  She has forever been “that woman.”  But look at the overwhelming kindness of the first husband.  Adam, with the honor of naming all living things, gave her a new name.

He named her Eve, because she would be the mother of all living things.

I think of Jesus.  It’s not when we are living into our idea of perfection we receive a new name.  It’s usually when we are at our lowest and believe the lie we must add to ourselves that He bestows a new name.  Adam named woman’s potential and purpose.  You were made perfectly to live into your potential and fulfill your purpose, a bringer of life to everyone you meet. This is our God.

by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.   Hebrews 10:14

Tobi, this is beautiful. It holds out grace and affirmation and a freedom to let go of the unnecessary striving for the rest of being and becoming. Thank you so much for sharing this insight.

Isn’t it wonderful? It’s been rolling around in my head since Sunday. I managed to get it onto the page, but my head is still lacking the clarity my heart heard. I’m looking forward to it growing with me in the days to come. I’m glad it blessed you, friend.
